The Mark Drama

It’s a new year – the nights are long and the weather is cold and dreary…. but already we’re starting to think about Easter and the hope it brings – and this year over Palm Sunday weekend we are planning to get involved with communicating the whole of Mark’s gospel to others in the form of The Mark Drama. It really is a fantastic Gospel opportunity and is a very powerful way of communicating the life and words of Jesus to our friends and neighbours.

You may have already seen The Mark Drama or you may have never heard of it before – it is a drama where every incident in Mark’s Gospel is vividly and powerfully portrayed in 90 minutes. It doesn’t need props, costumes, microphones or professional actors….however, it does need people to get involved and that might actually be where you can step in! We are looking for a team of 15 people willing to take part - 8 men and 7 women – who are predominantly under 40 (but not exclusively!)

We will be performing in the main hall of Cheam Baptist Church as theatre-in-the-round with three aisles. The action takes place in the centre circle as well as in the aisles and behind the audience – and in this way the audience feels itself to really be part of the action too.

Those who take part do not need any experience in acting before and there are no formal lines to learn – so you might be wondering how it all works! Those participating will be supported to learn the order of events in Mark’s Gospel and then at rehearsals are led through the whole performance by a professional director – and given the confidence to perform like you maybe never thought possible!

I remember taking part a few years ago with much trepidation – acting is not really my thing but I was willing to get involved. I am so glad I took part – it was an experience like nothing I had done before and brought the pages of Mark’s gospel alive to me. It was great to be part of a team working together and a very emotional experience all round. It was fantastic to be able to perform it to others but an unexpected bonus was the way it helped my own faith to grow and my appreciation of who Jesus is to blossom. I would thoroughly recommend stepping out in faith and going for it!

If you are interested in finding out more then it would help if you:-

· Like the idea of doing drama (whether you have experience or not)

· Have a voice that is loud enough to be heard in the main hall at CBC

· Are willing to commit to learning the order of events in Mark’s Gospel (with support!)

There will be an information evening on Wed Feb 9th at 8pm in the main hall here at CBC where you can find out more about what is entailed and decide if you would like to get involved. We would love to see you there – so do come along and find out what it’s all about!
