Family Friday - Sin enters the World

We continue our Family Friday series looking at the next chapter from Marty Machowski’s ‘The Ology’.

This week we’re looking at how…

Sin enters the World

Recap

What are some of the things we’ve learnt about God so far?

Prompts:

- God is eternal

- God is Three in One

- God is Everywhere

- God Knows Everything

- We are Made in God's Image

What was the world God created like?

- perfect (God walked in the garden with Adam & Eve. They enjoyed a perfect relationship with God)

So what went wrong?!

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (Gen 3:1-6)

What did Adam & Eve do wrong?

- they did not remember God's Words.

- they listened to the serpent (Satan)

Why did Adam & Eve do this?

- they thought they knew what was best for them

- they wanted more

Sin is us saying to God…

Shove of God, Im in charge, Not you!”

Or put a different way sin is…

“us thinking we know better than God and ignoring Him.”

That’s what Adam & Eve do.

What does Adam & Eve’s sin mean for us?

The Bible tells us that sin entered the world through this event. It means that we all sin and we all live our lives ignoring God.

Is that the end?

God punishes Adam, Eve and the snake (Satan).

But God makes a promise when he speaks to the snake.

See if you can spot the promise…

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Gen 3:14)

Did you spot it?

God promises that one day one of Eve’s great…great…great…great grandson’s would come to defeat Satan, the serpent by crushing his head.

All the way back in Genesis we are given a promise of Jesus.

When Jesus died he took the punishment we deserve for our sin.

Even though we are sinful we can now come to Jesus to ask him to forgive us.

That’s great news.

Have you asked Jesus to forgive you?

Why not spend time praying that as a family?!
